German cinematography of the late 20th century is usually associated with the leading filmmakers of New German Cinema or lascivious erotic movies. But believe it or not, the film production of this period was actually far more diverse. There were filmmakers whose works dramatically contrasted with the greatest festival hits. Many of them openly exploited mainstream and trashy cinematic techniques. This year’s midnight section comes with an impressive array of German films, ranging from strictly underground and camp movies through exploitation and television films to festering C or A movie shambers.
